Golden Hour On The Northern Beaches
A month-by-month guide to the softest light at our favourite coves — when to arrive, where to stand, what to bring.
— A note before we begin
The hour that makes everything kinder
Golden hour is the soft, slanted hour just after sunrise or just before sunset. It is the light that makes skin glow, sand turn buttery, and the sea look quiet — even when it isn't. It is the easiest light to photograph a family in, and the hardest to fake.
On the Northern Beaches we are lucky: we have it every day, on coves that face every direction. This guide tells you when to arrive, where to stand, and which spots to choose for your family — month by month.
With warmth,
Aline

Why timing matters more than location
A perfect cove in harsh midday light will give you squinting children and washed-out water. The same cove forty-five minutes before sunset will look like a different country. We always plan a session around the light first, and the location second.
For families on the Northern Beaches, sunrise is gentler on small children (cooler, quieter, fewer people) and sunset is warmer in colour. Both work — we choose based on your kids' best window.

Sun times by season — Northern Beaches
Arrive 60–75 minutes before sunset, or stay until 30 minutes after sunrise. These are approximate Sydney times, rounded for planning.
- Summer (Dec–Feb). Sunset around 8:00 pm. Sunrise around 5:45 am. Long, hot days — early starts win.
- Autumn (Mar–May). Sunset around 6:45 pm by April. The most reliable, balanced light of the year.
- Winter (Jun–Aug). Sunset around 5:00 pm. Short, soft, golden — pack a layer.
- Spring (Sep–Nov). Sunset around 7:30 pm by November. Wildflowers on the headlands; light returns slowly.

Five Northern Beaches coves — ranked for family light
- 01Bungan Beach. Quiet, dramatic headland, soft rock-pool light at low tide. Best for late afternoon. Steep stairs — not for very young toddlers in pram-stage.
- 02Mona Vale Basin (south end). Gentle, sheltered, easy parking, calm water for paddling. Ideal for families with babies and toddlers. Best one hour before sunset.
- 03Warriewood Beach. South-facing, beautifully even light all year. Long sweep of sand, great for movement and running children. Strong wind days only.
- 04Avalon (south corner). Warm tones at sunset, rock pools at low tide, big sky. Best for older kids who can scramble.
- 05Whale Beach. Sunrise heaven. Soft pink light, sheltered, almost empty before 7 am. Best for newborns and quiet sittings.

What to wear for sea light
- Earth and sand tones. Cream, oat, terracotta, sage, washed denim. They sit beautifully against ocean and sky.
- Soft, loose fabrics. Linen, cotton, gentle knits — they move with the breeze instead of fighting it.
- Layers, not bulk. A long cardigan or open shirt over a fitted top gives shape and texture.
- Barefoot or simple. Skip white sneakers and busy sandals. Bare feet or one quiet colour.

Arriving and settling
Arrive about 60 minutes before sunset. The first ten minutes are for letting children run, exploring the cove, finding shells, getting the wiggles out. Photographs come more easily when no one feels watched.
Bring a small picnic blanket, water, and snacks that don't stain. A change of clothes for after the session — sandy car seats are a real thing.
— Keep this handy
