Beach photo sessions on the Northern Beaches: wind, sand and sun

The Northern Beaches are one of the best places in Sydney to photograph a family outdoors, and one of the trickiest. Coastal light is beautiful for about ninety minutes a day and harsh for the rest of it, and the wind does not read forecasts.
This is how we plan around all of it.
The only two times worth shooting
Sunrise plus an hour, or the hour before sunset. That is it. Midday sun on white sand creates hard shadows under eyes and makes everyone squint, and no amount of editing fixes squinting.
In summer, sunrise sessions are often better on the Beaches: the air is still, the sand is empty, and small children are at their best. In winter, late afternoon is warmer and far more comfortable with a newborn or toddler.
Beaches and spots that work
- Mona Vale Beach and the headland — wide sand, rock shelf texture, easy parking, five minutes from the studio.
- Bungan and Newport — quieter at sunrise, sheltered from a southerly.
- Narrabeen Lagoon — the calm-water option when the surf beaches are blown out.
- North Curl Curl and Freshwater — dramatic rock pools and headland backdrops.
- Shelly Beach, Manly — protected, gentle water, good for toddlers who want to paddle.
Wind, and how we work with it
A northeasterly will lift hair and dresses; a strong southerly makes a session genuinely unpleasant. We watch the forecast in the two days before your session and will move you rather than push through something miserable.
When there is a workable breeze, we use it — flowing fabric and moving hair make maternity and family frames feel alive. Bring a hair tie for the calmer frames and let the rest be windswept.
Sand, salt and small children
- Bring towels and a full change of clothes for every child.
- Expect wet feet. Plan for it and the session stays fun.
- A small bag of snacks bought at the end, not the beginning, is excellent leverage.
- Sunscreen goes on twenty minutes before, and be careful with the shiny mineral kind on faces.
If the weather turns
Overcast is not a problem — soft cloud is flattering light and we will happily shoot in it. Rain and strong wind are. We reschedule those at no cost, usually to the nearest matching tide and light window, and for newborn bookings we can move the session indoors to the Mona Vale studio instead.
Beach or studio?
Beach sessions suit maternity, extended family, older children and milestone shoots. For newborns under fourteen days, the studio is safer and warmer, and the classic curled posing is not achievable outdoors. Plenty of families do both: studio for the newborn, a beach session later in the year.
