What newborn photography really costs on Sydney's Northern Beaches

Almost every newborn photographer in Sydney uses one of two models. The first is a low session fee — often $150 to $290 — where the photographs themselves are bought afterwards, usually $80 to $150 per image. The advertised price feels friendly, but a family who loves fifteen frames leaves with a bill north of $1,500.

The second is an all-inclusive package: one price covering the planning, the session itself, and a set number of hand-retouched digital images. Prints, albums and wall art stay optional. That is the model we use, because it means you can decide before the session what you are comfortable spending, instead of deciding while looking at photographs of your two-week-old.

Across Mona Vale, Manly, Dee Why and the surrounding suburbs, most established newborn studios sit in these bands:

• Session-fee-only studios: $150–$390 to book, then $80–$150 per digital image.
• Inclusive packages: $550–$1,200 depending on how many retouched digitals are included.
• Mobile or in-home newborn sessions: usually $100–$200 above the equivalent studio price, to cover travel and setup.
• Wall art, albums and framed prints: $99 for a small print through to $900+ for a large framed piece or album.

Our sessions start from $590 + GST and include the planning call, the full session in the Mona Vale studio, the styling and props, and hand-retouched digital images. There is no per-image charge to unlock what we shot — the included digitals are yours.

Most families invest between $800 and $1,200 once they add prints or a framed piece. Some spend only the session fee and take their digitals home. Both are completely fine, and nobody is sold to in a dark room.

A newborn session is not a 45-minute portrait sitting. Ours run two to three hours because the baby sets the pace: feeds, settles, nappy changes, and the slow careful work of posing a sleeping infant safely. The studio is heated, the props and wraps are laundered between every session, and every pose is either supported or composited from two safe frames.

You are also paying for editing time. Newborn skin is retouched by hand — blotchiness, scratches, peeling — which is roughly twenty to thirty minutes per finished image.

• How many retouched digital images are included, and what does an extra one cost?
• Is the session fee refundable or transferable if the baby arrives early or late?
• Are props, wraps and outfits included, or hired separately?
• Is the photographer insured and trained in newborn safety and posing?
• How and when do I see the images, and how long does my gallery stay open?
• Are prints and albums optional, or does the package require a minimum spend?

Booking early does not usually get you a discount, but it does get you a date. Newborn photographers hold a loose window around your due date rather than a fixed appointment, and the good ones only take a handful of newborns a month so each baby gets an unhurried session. On the Northern Beaches, the practical advice is to book somewhere between 20 and 34 weeks of pregnancy.
