The sitter session is the most underrated milestone in a baby's first year. Somewhere between six and nine months a baby learns to sit unsupported, and for a few short months they can hold themselves upright, meet the camera, and have not yet worked out how to crawl away from it. It is a very small window and it produces the most joyful photographs of the whole first year.

Why the sitter stage matters

Newborn photographs capture what your baby was. Sitter photographs capture who they are becoming. There is eye contact, deliberate expression, a laugh that arrives on cue when a parent makes the right noise, and a spine strong enough to hold a pose without props.

It is also brief. Before six months most babies cannot hold themselves up. After about ten months, the average baby would rather be crawling towards the light stand than sitting on the blanket. Seven to nine months is the sweet spot.

How we run a session with a baby who moves

Fast, playful and short. Sixty to ninety minutes is plenty — beyond that, babies at this age are done and no amount of patience changes it. We work in bursts, with breaks for a snack and a crawl around.

✻Two or three simple setups, not eight. Fewer changes means more real expressions.
✻Bring the noisy toy, the favourite book and the snack that never fails.
✻Parent-and-baby frames — babies this age look at their people, so we use that rather than fight it.
✻Standing-at-the-couch frames if your baby is already pulling up.

Cake smash, or not

Sitter sessions are often booked as a first-birthday alternative. If you want a cake smash we will happily plan one — a simple, well-styled cake in colours that suit the set, then a bath tub finish. If you would rather not, an unstyled sitter session photographs better than most cake smashes do, and there is nothing to clean up.

Pairing it with your newborn session

Families who photographed their newborn with us often book a sitter session as the second chapter, then a first birthday or family session as the third. Sitting the frames side by side on a wall is the single most-loved thing our clients do with their photographs. Sessions start from $590 + GST, and prints, albums and framed sets are chosen on your reveal call.

Common questions.

What age is a sitter session?

Six to twelve months, with seven to nine being ideal — old enough to sit unsupported, young enough not to crawl off the set.

What if my baby is not sitting yet?

We will reschedule at no cost. It is very common, and a month makes an enormous difference at this age.

How long does a sitter session take?

Sixty to ninety minutes. Babies this age give you a great hour and then let you know they are finished.

Should we do a cake smash?

Only if you want one. We offer it as an add-on at the end of the session, complete with a tub finish, but a clean sitter session is equally lovely and far less sticky.

Can siblings and parents be in the frames?

Yes, and at this age we recommend it. Babies engage with their people, and those interactions produce the best expressions of the session.
